IT PROVED to be a yet another golden
weekend for Tonbridge Judo Club at the Kent Closed Championships, writes Glenn
Garrett.
The squad walked off with eight medals – five gold and three silver. Star of the
show was 12-year-old Enrico Atkinson. Fighting as an under 16 in the u60kg
category, he produced a stunning display to win the final. Coach Chris Bowles
said: "It was a top result from a boy who is destined to be a top, top player.
He is showing fantastic potential."
The other under 16 gold medallists were George Cullum, u46kg, James Nelson,
u50kg, Shannon Cricket, u63kg and Scarlett English, u57kg. Cricket was bowled
over by her victory, coming less than a year after she started playing the
sport. "She did fantastically well," Bowles said. "When you consider the amount
of time she has been training and the fact this was her first affiliated
competition, she conducted herself really well."
Silver medallists were under 16s Tommy Chambers and Harry Try.
Seventeen-year-old James Sparks also impressed by picking up a senior silver
medal. Quite an achievement at that age.
Some members of Tonbridge Judo squad are off to the Irish Open this weekend –
volcano permitting!
